Michael A. Nutter began serving on City Council in 1992, and served nearly 15 years. He represented the 4th District, which includes Wynnefield, Overbrook, Roxborough, Manayunk, East Falls and parts of North Philadelphia, West Philadelphia and West Mount Airy. He has served as the 52nd Ward Democratic Leader since 1990.

In 2001, Councilman Nutter was appointed to the Board of City Trusts, which manages all money or other property given to the City of Philadelphia. The Board administers over 110 separate trusts for a wide variety of charitable purposes, including Girard College and the Wills Eye Hospital.

He also serves as Chairman of the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority Board, appointed to the position in February 2003. As chairman, he crafted a pivotal labor- management agreement which was signed July 2003; and he is currently spearheading a $700 million expansion project for the Center. Under his leadership, the Convention Center has recruited professional, experienced management staff; increased bookings; and, created a business-like environment for convention customers and attendees.

Before pursuing a career in public service, Councilman Nutter worked as an investment manager at Pryor, Counts & Co., Inc., specializing in municipal finance. While working in the private sector, he began attending City Council meetings where his interest in Philadelphia led to a lifelong dedication to public service. He was soon working for a number of campaigns and elected officials, including those of Ed Rendell, as well as City Council members John Anderson and Angel Ortiz. He was elected as a committe person in 52nd Ward 1986, 52nd Democratic Ward Leader in 1990, and entered City Council in 1992.

Michael Nutter grew up at 55th & Larchwood Ave. in West Philadelphia with his parents, sister and grandmother. His family worked together and made sacrifices in order to make sure that Michael and his sister received a strong education, both in the classroom and as a member of a neighborhood and community. His academic achievement in school resulted in him receiving an academic scholarship to St. Joseph's Preparatory School. After graduating in 1975, he enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania, where he developed a passion for business and economics and was accepted into the prestigious Wharton School of Business, graduating in 1979.

He resides in Wynnefield with his wife, Lisa, and daughter, Olivia, who attends a Philadelphia public school. His son, Christian, lives and works in New Jersey. Michael is a member of the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in West Philadelphia.
